Diaries in interleaved almanacs, 1766-1805.

15 diaries in interleaved almanacs kept by Rev. Samuel West, minister of the First Parish in Needham (1747-89) and Boston's Hollis St. Church (1789-1808), in 1766-69, 1772, 1775 (also including two pages for Aug.-Sep. 1779), 1790, 1795, 1797-1801, 1803, and 1805. Subjects covered in the brief daily entries include West's preaching, including numerous exchanges, visits, deaths and health of locals, his own health, the weather, references to visits by his father and brother, and politics, including the beginning of the Revolution, and the situation in Europe, particularly in the 1790s and early 1800s. In addition to the diary entries, the vols. also contain some of West's personal accounts, lists of deaths and marriages performed, presents received, charitable contributions, and memoranda on a variety of topics.

Samuel West (1738-1808) was the son of the Rev. Thomas West (1708-1790), of Rochester, Mass., and the cousin of the renowned Rev. Dr. Samuel West (1730-1807), of New Bedford, Mass. Samuel West, the former, graduated from Harvard in 1761 and settled as minister in Needham, Mass., from 1764 to 1788, when he became minister of the Hollis Street Church in Boston.
